School Uniform

The School Dress Code has been established to ensure that all students represent our core school values.

RATIONALE

The dress code is established by the School Board of Mindarie Primary School to promote a positive, safe and healthy learning environment for the students.

The School Board believes a school dress code:

  • Encourages equality among students.
  • Fosters responsibility, organisation, and accountability for personal items, such as school hats.
  • Fosters and enhances the public image of the school.
  • Ensures students are safely and appropriately dressed for specific school activities.
  • Assists in building school and team spirit.
  • Assists in identifying our students for requirements of duty of care, especially for out of school activities.

 STANDARDS

To support student health and well-being, students are expected to be clean and well-groomed, including clipped fingernails and long hair tied back. Hair that is collar-length or longer must be tied up or back.

  • Piercings: Only small studs or sleepers for pierced ears are permitted. Other body piercings are strongly discouraged due to safety concerns. Students with facial piercings will be asked to cover them with a sticking plaster for health and safety reasons. If this is not adhered to, students may be excluded from recess, lunch, sport and/or Physical Education activities.
  • Jewellery: Medic Alert jewellery is permitted. Cultural or religious jewellery may be worn with prior approval from the principal.
  • Watches: Standard watches may be worn. Smart or electronic watches must be set to aeroplane mode during school hours.
  • Cosmetics: Makeup, nail polish and nail extensions are not permitted. Students wearing these items will be asked to remove them.
  • Sun Safety: In line with the Cancer Council Sun Protection Policy, students must wear a broad-brimmed school hat and clothing that covers the shoulders when outdoors. Mindarie Primary follows a “no hat, no play” policy. Students without a hat will be required to sit on a bench near the undercover area during playtimes.
  • Appropriate Dress: Students must wear pants that are clearly visible below the school shirt. Bike shorts do not meet this requirement and are only permitted when worn underneath a school skirt or skort.

CONSEQUENCES

If a student’s clothing or accessories do not meet the school’s dress code, staff may:

  • Contact parents to supply students with appropriate items. If a loan item is available, it may be supplied to the student, for the day.
  • Prevent the student from attending incursions, excursions or interschool sporting events.
  • Request that inappropriate items (e.g. non-compliant jumpers or jewellery) be removed and placed in the student’s bag for safekeeping.
